In the afternoon enjoy a visit to the National Tile Museum exhibiting decorative Portugese tiles in a 14th century convent. (Admission to museums is not included.) |

Option for Tuesday February 17: In the afternoon accompany Joe and
Beth to the Gulbenkian Museum, home to one of Europe’s largest and finest private collections of paintings, period furniture, ceramics, and tapestries, as well as a marvelous coin collection spanning 5000 years. (This optional walking tour does not include price of admission.)
Option for Wednesday February 18: In Sintra, major attractions include the Castelo do Mouros, an 8th century Moorish Castle, the 14th century Moorish Palacio National (which has marvelously furnished rooms that display hand-painted ceilings and a remarkable selection of 18th century azulejos (ceramic tiles), and the 19th century Palacio de Pena. The picturesque town of Estoril has often been noted as a rival of other main European artistic centers with a variety of exhibitions by both national and international artists. For lovers of the history of art, a visit to the Parish Church – dating from the 16th century is a must! Other attractions include the Cascais Citadel, with its artillery museum which is still used for military purposes, the Town Hall which is noted for old tiles, and a portion of a medieval castle that still stands near the town.
Option for Thursday February 19: Belem has an large number of prime tourist sights and cultural attractions, including the Belem Palace, Jeronimos Monastary, Tomb of Vasco de Gama, and the famous BelemTower. |
